Music has always been a constant in my life, and I’ve been playing various instruments since I was 6: piano, then flute, the guitar, and now ukulele. Now while I don’t claim to have played any of these particularly well, (well, I guess there was that music award for the flute in 5th grade…), I’ve always enjoyed making music!
My most prolific music period was when I was in a band in my 20’s called BFF (Best Friends Forever). We wore armbands with glittery BFF letters, spent hours practicing twice a week in a cramped studio above the old Northsix club, (now the Music Hall of Williamsburg), and felt like rockstars for a little while. We played super fun indie, poppy, punky songs with catchy hooks, while I played guitar, sang, and wrote the songs. My other main partners in crime were Maya Noren, (bass), Mel Abad (drums), and Jason Yung (original drums). We played out a handful of shows in New York City and Brooklyn, and had an absolute blast!
Lately, my music playing has “progressed” to Moana songs played on the ukulele, but stay tuned- I hope to record a series of picture books set to music!
In the mean time, take a walk with me down memory lane, and hear a few of our angsty, fun little ditties. Check out Let it Go, circa 2005, recorded far before Frozen’s little number… Super hilarious fact: When my daughter asks “Alexa, play Let it go!”, 50% of the time she gets BFF instead of Idina Menzel.
** Fun fact: music cliche aside, I am actually from Cleveland originally.
